I once read an article about how music and happiness are linked and was absolutely amazed by what neurological studies have found. Apparently, listening to music can not only improve our mood but also reduce stress, blood pressure and heart disease. Amazing, right? One of the first things I usually do when I wake up in the morning is turn on some music to kick start my day. I simply can’t imagine life without it. I mean, what’s life without music? Whether I’m on my way to campus, studying for a test or walking my dog, I’m always listening to music.
Everyone has that one song that can alleviate their bad mood and make even their worst day bearable. Whenever I’m feeling a bit down or just having a really bad day, I simply put on my headphones, turn on my favourite music and immediately I’m transformed. I bet no one can deny the burst of energy experienced when their favourite song comes on. The minute I hear one my favourite songs playing, I get this rush of happiness and can feel how my mood instantly changes. I go from feeling blue to feeling absolutely fantastic in just a few minutes. Listening to your favourite upbeat music is probably the simplest and fastest way to boost your mood and energy. Music can have a huge influence on your state of mind, making you feel melancholy and happy at the same time.
Neurological studies show that music affects our brains the same way love does. Music causes the brain to release dopamine, a chemical that is essential in aspects of happiness. I have incorporated music into every aspect of my life. I listen to music when I commute, working on an assignment, studying, and even when I am at home and about to sleep.
So, if you’re feeling a bit low, turn on some of your favourite upbeat music and allow yourself to get lost in your own world. It’ll have a quick and dramatic effect and have you feeling better in no time. Crying obviously helps too, but it’s simply not the same kind of quick fix.
Whenever you are in need of a pick me up, play any of these songs and you’ll be smiling no matter what mood you are in. Here is a list of my 10 happiest songs:
- One Republic – Good life
- Flo rida – Good feeling
- Nicole Scherzinger – Boomerang
- The Black Eyed Peas – I gotta feeling
- Macklemore & Ryan Lewis – Can’t hold us
- Junior Senior – Move your feet
- Maroon 5 – Beautiful goodbye
- Olly Murs – Dance with me tonight
- Rihanna ft Calvin Harris – We found love
- David Guetta and Chris Willis ft Fergie & LMFAO – Gettin’ Over You
People might not always be there for you, but music definitely will
Don’t you just love it when you look at the calendar and realise that it’s only 3 months till summer. Yes, just 3 months till summer graces us with its presence! Well, despite Cape Town’s chilly weather, it’s almost that time of the year when we head off to the sandy shores and spend our days soaking up the sun. Whether you going for a swim, catching a tan or simply just beach bumming with your mates remember to rock your sunnies and put on some sunblock. Summer is definitely the best time of the year. Don’t you agree? What’s a better time than the time for tanning, swimming, ocean-air, sun-kissed hair, late nights and beautiful sunsets? The days are longer, the weather is amazing and the fruit are more delicious and juicier and ever. Just thinking about it gets me all excited.
The beach is definitely my favourite place in the world. There’s just something about being at the beach that brings me complete happiness. My daily routine usually consists of me running around campus trying to get a hundred things done while at the same time stressing about some pretty significant and insignificant things. But when I’m at the beach nothing else matters except the present. I don’t know whether it’s the calming sound of the waves or the magnificent view of the ocean sparkling under the sun that provides me with a relaxing and therapeutic escape route from my busy and stressful life. Whenever life gets a bit too crazy for me, I simply just take the day off and head to beach. For that moment, it’s just me and the ocean. Just me and my favourite place.
So when life gets a bit too much for you and you need an escape route, just head off to your closest beach, dig your toes into the sand and listen to sound of the waves. You’ll be amazed by how calming and relaxing it is. It won’t take away the problems you may be facing, but it might help change the way you see it.
When life hands you lemons… Make lemon meringue pie! There is nothing more relaxing than creaming together some butter and sugar or icing fluffy cupcakes. Don’t you agree? Well whenever I feel stressed or having a bad day, I simply pull out my baking tray and let my imagination and creativity run wild. There’s just something about baking that provides me with a relaxing and therapeutic escape route from my busy day to day life. I don’t know whether it’s channelling the built up stress and energy into something productive which provides the sense of release or whether it’s the aroma of freshly-baked cake and cookies that puts me in a better mood, but nothing seems as bad when there’s freshly-baked homemade cupcakes on the table. I truly believe that baking can lift one’s mood and bring both happiness and a sense of accomplishment to their life.
So can baking really make you happy? Of course it can! What could possibly put you in a better mood than the taste of a delicious lemon cupcake or double chocolate brownie? There’s just one problem with baking though; it may result in weight gain but thanks to gym we can bake as much as we want.
So what if it all goes wrong and you left with cake that’s flatter than a pancake? You may be tempted to throw mixture at the walls or send that “pancake” flying across the room, but just breathe and stay calm. Be creative and whip up some custard, pour it over your cake and you’ll have a delicious cake and custard pudding. The most important thing I’ve learnt in the kitchen is creativity and patience. The same goes for life, if things don’t go your way, don’t give up; make the best of the situation.
So next time you having a bad day or just feeling a bit down, turn up the music, pull out that recipe book and let your creativity run wild.
It’s the weekend baby and you know what that means right? Free time to do whatever it is we want to do. So how do you spend your weekend? Well if I’m not at campus studying or working on an assignment then I’m definitely out spending time with my amazing friends or family. Whether we are sipping some non-alcoholic cocktails at the beach, sharing popcorn at the cinema or simply having a conversation over a cup of coffee we are still having lots of fun and enjoy being together. I think one of biggest gifts life has to offer are friends and family. To be honest I can’t imagine my life without them. Can you? Imagine not having anyone to speak to about absolutely anything or not being able to pick up the phone when you have a date and need to borrow a pair of shoes or a piece of jewellery. My friends and family means absolutely everything to me. They bring so much joy, happiness and beauty to my life. From sharing tears to sharing laughter, words cannot describe how grateful I am for having them in my life and how much I appreciate each and every one of them.
As you and I both know life is full of ups and downs and there comes time when we all need someone to turn to for support, advice or just someone to speak to. Who better else than to turn to your friends and family, right? Many people often forget the importance of having friends and family in their life. They fail to realize the joy and happiness friends and family brings and how they are able to alleviate the pressures and challenges they face in their day to day life. I strongly believe that the key to a happy life is spending time with friends and family. It’s absolutely amazing what the smile of a friend or the advice of a family member can do for you especially if you are feeling down. So next time you are faced with a difficult challenge, take a look around you and remember that you don’t have to face it alone. You are surrounded by friends and family who care and will be there for you through every step of the way.
So always remember to spend time with your friends and family and live a happier, healthier and longer life.
Have a great weekend
Have you ever had your heart broken by someone you absolutely adored? Or accidently bump into someone and have their coffee spilled all over you? Well I have and as much as I wished I could just teleport to another planet I knew that it was simply never going to happen. So in the end I’m left standing there thinking why bad things happen to good people which obviously doesn’t help me or my situation any way, right? I agree life can be pretty nasty at times but it’s the way we handle these situations that matter the most. As my 13 year old brother would say, “Take a pill and chill”, and as much as I want to disagree with him, he is right. We often concentrate on the problem when we should be focusing on finding a solution. So instead of teleporting to another planet, getting your heart broken should be seen as an fantastic opportunity to find a more amazing partner. If you had coffee spilled over you, see it as making a new friend. It’s very important that we think positively and try and see the beauty in everything instead of dwelling on the negative aspects. I believe that people should live everyday as if it was their last and try and make the best of a bad situation.
